So, in honour of my beloved country’s 143rd year of existence (in 7 years we’ll be 150! Or, as my mother put it, when I’m 76, Canada will be 200. Um.), I’m officially devoting July 2010 to celebrating Canadian literature, because there’s a lot of really good stuff out there that, in my experience, often does not really register with readers from other countries (UK, USA, Australia, NZ, etc). Plus, even Canadians are frequently unaware of great literature happening here, because so much of our pop culture insects with that of the US, and so we aren’t even aware of what we’re reading…
Hopefully, you all know the “classics” like Margaret Atwood and Robertson Davies (although my spidey sense tells me you probably don’t…), so I’ll be focusing more on “new” Canadian literature, although I will talk about “classic” Canadian writers like those listed above.
This is going to be an adventure for me, as well as for you, since I don’t know that much about Canadian literature!
So, strap on your snowshoes, slather yourself in maple syrup, put on your toque, and let’s get to it! Jokes. It’s about 100000 degrees here right now, so nix the first and last suggestion.
I still expect you all to be slathered in maple syrup.
P.S. Never fear, though, I will still post normal posts.
